The New Wonder Material PDF Print E-mail

 Bianchi Dolomiti

There's a 'new' wonder material out there, one that's crossed over from the custom scene to the mainstream.

It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most brands are opting for simplified tube sections and rudimentary construction methods.

Not that this detracts from the models on offer; in fact, simplicity adds to their perceived desirability.

This is a material with only one syllable; there's no 'nano'  prefix, or 'ilium' suffix.

It's development was perfected centuries ago, yet its outstanding properties are only just being discovered by the new wave of product managers.

This new wonder material is ...wait for it... STEEL !

Following along on the back of the boom in retro-styled clothing and fuelled by the ersatz  messenger trend, mainstream manufacturers are clamouring over themselves to source lugged, steel models to complete their 'lifestyle' ranges.

Some of the more desirable brands, notably Scapin, Somec and Tommasini, kept the flame lit and carried on producing their fine steel models during the '90's 'alu' years.

Others, like Colnago, are reacting to demand after seeing the high prices their 20 year old models attract on the likes of eBay.  Despite the fact that quality-wise the Colnago's couldn't hold a candle to, say, a Llewellyn or a Kirk, they'll no doubt sell out by Christmas - such is the power of the Colnago legend.

Its all good news for custom builders; a resurgence in steel means more tubes, more lugs - and more interest - out there.  Vindication too, for those who stuck to their torches and refused to give in to fashion.

At a time when some were concerned about the long-term availability of steel framebuilding materials, thanks to this latest trend there could be plenty of tubes and lugs to work with for a few years yet.
