Page 1 of 2 The eyes of custom bike aficionados the world over will be firmly fixed on California this weekend.
This weekend sees the doors opening on the inaugural San Diego Custom Bike Show. The SDCBS will bring together some of America's finest framebuilders to a city which could quite rightly lay claims to being the hotbed of the US framebuilding scene.
From the opening of the legendary Masi California workshops in the early '70's (situated a bike ride away in neighbouring Carlsbad), to the present-day workshops of the San Diego Framebuilders Co-operative and the finishing studios of world-renowned painter Joe Bell, San Diego craftsmen and women have defined American framebuilding over the last half-century.
As well as true masters of the craft such as Rob Roberson, Bilenky, Brian Baylis and Bruce Gordon, the SDCBS will feature some of the hottest new builders at work in the USA today. Courage, Argonaut, Moth Attack and Gallus are part of the 'new wave' of American builders who'll be drawing an appreciative crowd.
It's not all 'steel and lugs'... There's the trendsetting innovations of carbon masters Calfee, while KVA's state-of-the-art welding and materials processes are sure to impress the tech-heads. Elsewhere, traditional mastery meets cutting-edge technology in the work of titanium pioneer Bill Holland. From Dave Ybarrola, not only will there be his fine traditionally-built frames, but also his exciting new Selle Logica composite saddle designs – sure to be a major talking point amongst showgoers.
Purveyors of bicycle componentry don't come any finer than Speedplay, White Industries, Cane Creek and Campagnolo. All will be in attendance at San Diego, plus many more!
There'll be frame parts from Henry James and Paragon Machine Works; soft goods from Sock Guy and the artwork of bicycle painters Keith Anderson, Joe Bell and CyclArt.
It's all in a good cause too, with a healthy portion of the gate headed towards local bicycle advocacy schemes and helping with the upkeep of the local velodrome. The remainder of profits will be put to work funding the 2010 show.
In short, what awaits the bike lover is one peach of an event...plus sun, sea, and Mexican food! If you can get there, be there!
